Data coverage and updates
The crop and forage view uses USDA RMA’s State/County/Crop files, including coverage levels. The livestock and dairy view uses the LRP, LGM, and DRP participation files. Reporting years span 2016–2025; DRP begins in 2019. This version was retrieved on September 20, 2026. The most recent source files were updated September 14, 2026; older archived files have earlier update dates.
This is a dated data release, not a real-time feed. Historical figures can be revised. Current 2026 business is excluded to avoid presenting an incomplete year alongside past years.
Reporting years and locations
Crop and forage figures use commodity year. Livestock and dairy figures use reinsurance year as published in the participation files. These are separate views and are not summed together. Reinsurance year is the insurance agreement year, rather than calendar-year cash payments.
National totals retain records whose state USDA labels “XX.” Those amounts cannot be assigned to a state on the map. State results therefore describe the published, geographically identified business and may understate a state’s actual business. Gray means no published amount or an undefined ratio, not zero risk. Coverage-level filtering is available for crop and forage records; livestock products have different coverage and deductible structures.
Calculations and interpretation
Dollar amounts are summed over the selected records. Loss ratio is total indemnities divided by total premium, including subsidized premium. Federal subsidy share is the reported federal subsidy divided by total premium. Ratios are calculated from summed amounts, never averaged from individual row ratios. A zero denominator produces no ratio.
Liability is the reported dollar amount of insurance. It is not a forecast of expected loss. Indemnities are reported insurance payments for the selected business year. Amounts are nominal dollars, without inflation adjustment. State and private subsidies, additional subsidies, and EFA discounts are retained separately in the crop data; “premium less federal subsidy” is not the final producer bill. Livestock producer premium is taken directly from the source.
These are aggregate program statistics. They do not measure farm-level basis risk, uninsured losses, coverage adequacy, farmer profit, or insurer net profit. Different crop mixes and insured risks affect comparisons. Policies and acreage are not totaled here because endorsements and reporting units can overlap.
Source files and reproducibility
The Python pipeline downloads public files over HTTPS, checks their layouts, and aggregates county and endorsement records to state level. No account, API key, or private farm records are used. Records with no earned premium and entirely empty or zero financial fields are excluded. All reported financial amounts are retained.
